Sesame Street has had a long tradition of puppets singing with music idols but the team’s new series of pop-culture parodies may be what they are remembered for. Young students will likely not have watched the original TV series on which these parodies are based, but the spoofs work as stand-alone educational experiences. Older students can compare the original to the parody to explore this literary device.

Language/Media Literacy Resource Idea

Parody is an imitation of the style of a particular writer, artist, or genre with deliberate exaggeration for comic effect. In what ways is “Homelamb” a parody of “Homeland“? Include some of the following points in your answer:

  • use of puns
  • use of the fairy tale genre
  • comparison of the props used in both shows
  • hat tips to the original plot lines
  • explanation of how the original characters in “Homeland” are spoofed by their representation in “Homelamb”
